If you're like me when I bought the 4 Black, I had three main questions: Is it worth upgrading from the 3 to the 4?
Which version of the 4 should I get? The Hero4 Black is the company's flagship camera targeted at pros and anyone who wants the best damn video you can get from an action cam more on that later and is willing to pay for it.
The camera's processor is twice as powerful as its predecessor's, allowing you to record at up to 4K resolution at 30 frames per second.
It can also capture p at fps, which can make for some very smooth video when shooting fast-moving scenes, as well as cool slow-motion clips.
Neither option does battery life any favors, though. Add in its high 60Mbps recording bitrate and you've got one powerful tiny camera.
The Black certainly has advantages, but unless you must have the best of the best from GoPro, you're probably better off with the Silver or a camera from Sony, iOn, Contour, Drift or others.
It no longer slides in the back, but drops into the bottom, which works just fine and makes swapping them out easier.
However, this required a battery redesign as well, which means you can't use batteries from previous models.
Another key change -- this time for the better -- is to the camera's buttons. The layout remains the same, but what was the Wi-Fi power button on the right side is now a "Hilight Tag.
While recording with the Hero4, you hit the button immediately after that cool moment happens and it's tagged so you can find it fast later when viewing in GoPro's free mobile app or desktop Studio software.
It's not the first action cam to have a feature like this , but it's a useful addition. When not recording, this same button accesses your settings menus.
The menus on past models were a mess, but GoPro made things a bit easier by making everything sensitive to which mode you're in. Ultra Wide, Medium, and Narrow.
These help you choose the preferred perspective, be it wide-angle and inclusive, medium for a bit of focus, or close-up Audio Acquisition There is an internal mono mic and it is possible to record from an external source using a separately available 3.
An integrated ADC analog-to-digital converter in the HERO4 Black enables compatibility with a wider variety of professional, low-sensitivity external mics for immersive stereo audio capture and enhanced performance - whether recording voices, an acoustic jam session, or a live show Dedicated Settings Button A single button provides direct access to the camera settings.
HERO4 Black is rated 4. I recently purchased the GoPro Hero 4 Black primarly to take 4k timelapse videos during cityscape shoots.
The camera seemed to perform well the first few days. Then I started noticing occasional jittery, pixelated green frames in my videos and time lapse stills.
Today after only 7 days of gentle use the camera freezes up and does not function. I turned the power off and rebooted. The camera works for a few minutes and freezes up again.
I have researched this problem online and have learned that it is surprisingly common. I will be returning it asap. GoPro really need to improve their quality control.
This allows for both camera settings control and wi-fi live video feed and video review. There are some significant settings tweaks that are best done via wi-fi.
I suggest to learn about these settings, especially ProTune, which is higher resolution than normal. Very happy with this camera although having to up-res footage to Apple ProRes is problematic but necessary with my other camera co-decs too.
Rated 1 out of 5 by ArcShooter from Poor Peformance for Timelapse I am a professional photographer using this for a timelapse project.
Have had numerous issues. In short, do not count on this camera for anything that requires reliable, predictable results. Rated 5 out of 5 by dermer from Outstanding Quality with One Small Issue The protune images are phenomenal and easy to color grade.
I have only used the Hero 4 a couple of times as my camera had an issue with the audio. There was a helicopter sound on the audio channel whenever I use the wifi.
After some research, I discovered that there was an issue with the hardware on some of the cameras that caused this problematic audio.
I contacted GoPro and they were immediately responsive in sending me an RMA and arranging to replace the defective camera.
I use these cameras primarily for mountain bike footage. Rated 5 out of 5 by Morgan Olson Marketing Manager from so far so good I'm not a big fan of the little LED screen on the camera but the app enlarges everything and has a 15 minute learning curve Rated 1 out of 5 by Ryan W.
The login requirement is an epic flaw and one that makes the camera a liability to the professional. I was unable to because it wouldn't let me without logging in first.
Despite the fact that I didn't remember my password, I also didn't have Internet access. Thus I was unable to use my GoPro. As a professional, this only happens once on a piece of equipment and then you move on to other devices that are not going to fail you when you need them.
I was really shocked that a company like GoPro would have such an epic flaw with their software.
So my rating is 1 star since it is useless as a professional device. It is easy to use, light and still delivers good quality pictures or higher-than-average video quality.
But is has its limitations, too. Battery life is short if you use WiFi, even with battery backpack installed, and focal length is excessively wide if you intend to use full resolution, giving your pictures a fish-eye like aspect.
Rated 5 out of 5 by Olga K. My boyfriend and I were prepping for a trip to Thailand, and I wanted to make sure we could get some photos together without having to ask others.
I have since taken it on many other trips and adventures.
